TV shows geared towards youth now mostly emphasize Fame, Popularity and Financial Success. A decade ago the emphasis was on Community, Benevolence, and Self-Acceptance.

I was born to a fortunate family, the fortunate gender of a fortunate race. In a fortunate country at the most fortunate time. something’s fishy here.

I know it’s partially “I’m special” syndrome, but I really believe that we snuck in as the last generation to escape being psychologically decimated by the media.

Boy Meets World, Family Matters, Recess, even Power Rangers; normal people in middle-class situations dealing with human issues.

I haven’t kept up on what Disney is doing, but a cursory glance of the Disney Channel listings includes someone whose dad is the White House chef, someone about to become an emperor, a girl who is a secret pop star, more pop stars living in the hollywood hills, jesus christ more pop stars, some meta show where they prank their own actors,

oh, wait, they’re still playing recess.
